WASHINGTON D.C. - The National Chairman of the Republican National Hispanic Assembly, Pedro Celis, Ph.D., issued the following statement in response to President Bush’s State of the Union Address:

“President Bush clearly reminded us that the future security of America depends on promoting freedom and fighting tyranny in this world,” said National Chairman Celis. “We applaud the President's reiterated commitment to keeping America competitive through tax-relief, free trade, fiscal responsibility, comprehensive immigration reform and promoting the ownership society.”

“We are also pleased by the President’s commitment to transforming this nation’s health care system. Health care is a major priority for many Hispanics in this nation,” said Chairman Celis.

Over 30 percent of Hispanics do not have health insurance - Hispanics are the largest group of uninsured in the United States.

There are currently over 35 million Hispanics in the United States. Hispanics represent over 14% of the total population. One in eight people in the United States are of Hispanic origin.
